BankWest Awards Scholarships to Area Students

BankWest Chairman, President and CEO Charles H. Burke III recently announced the awarding of 21 BankWest Scholarships to students from across South Dakota for the 2021-22 school year. Each student will receive a $1,500 scholarship to pursue post-secondary education at a school of their choice.

“Awarding scholarships to these bright, young students is a sincere pleasure and honor,” Burke said. “These young people exhibit strong leadership skills, academic excellence and a passion for their communities. In times like these, it’s reassuring to know they are pursuing their dreams and will be there to lead us into the future.”

BankWest has awarded $484,500 in academic scholarships during the past 28 years. Burke said 75 students applied for this year’s scholarships. The BankWest Scholarship program recognizes outstanding achievement by student account holders at BankWest. Students receiving $1,500 BankWest Scholarships include:

  • Frank Becker, son of David and Denette Becker of Pierre, is a sophomore at Black Hills State University where he is studying sociology.
  • Bayli Beehler, daughter of Jason and Jessica Beehler of Winner, is a junior at Augustana University where she is studying communication disorders.
  • Jackson Grimes, son of Levi and Elissa Grimes of Kadoka, is a senior at Kadoka Area High School. He plans to attend South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he will study civil engineering.
  • Ledger Hannan, son of Tom and Kim Hannan of Selby, is a senior at Selby Area High School. He plans to attend the University of South Dakota where he will study kinesiology and sport management.
  • Callie Heath, daughter of Brett and Cheyenne Heath of Colome, is a junior at Northern State University where she is studying banking and financial services.
  • Seneca Hertel, daughter of Paul and Tia Hertel of Pierre, is a senior at T.F. Riggs High School. She plans to attend the University of Nebraska Kearney to study communication disorders.
  • Blaine Hill, son of Jody and Cherie Hill of Onida, is a senior at Sully Buttes High School. He plans to attend South Dakota School of Mines & Technology where he will study mechanical engineering.
  • Avarie Hilton, daughter of Tim and Wanda Hilton of Indianola, IA, is a senior at Indianola High School. She plans to attend South Dakota State University to study pre-pharmacy.
  • Justin Houlette, son of Chris and Denice Houlette of Pierre, is a freshman at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he is studying civil engineering.
  • Kyla Keyes, daughter of Jim and Tracy Keyes of Pierre, is a freshman at South Dakota State University where she is studying elementary education.
  • Arden Koenecke, daughter of Brett and Lori Koenecke of Pierre, is a junior at Augustana University where she is studying government and communication studies.
  • Kenzie Kuxhaus, daughter of Terry and Carie Kuxhaus of Pierre, is a freshman at Presentation College where she is studying communications and human services.
  • Kally Millar, daughter of William and Lisa Millar of Geddes, is a senior at Platte-Geddes High School. She plans to attend the University of South Dakota where she will study communication studies and disorders.
  • Gracie Olivier, daughter of Michael-John and Jessica Olivier of Onida, is a senior at Sully Buttes High School. She plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University where she will study nursing.
  • Maria Pecora, daughter of Mark Pecora of Rapid City and Marlys Big Eagle of Sioux Falls, is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she is studying biological sciences.
  • Grace Phinney, daughter of Brian and Ranae Phinney of Mitchell, is a sophomore at South Dakota State University where she is studying animal science, pre-veterinary medicine.
  • Katy Sebert, daughter of Bill and Jane Sebert of Mitchell, is a senior at Mitchell High School. She plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University where she will study psychology and biology.
  • Bailey Spaans, daughter of Jay and Angela Spaans of Armour, is a senior at Armour High School. She plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University where she will study mathematics education.
  • Dylan Van Der Werff, son of Scott and Renee Van Der Werff of Armour, is a senior at Armour High School. He plans to attend South Dakota State University where he will study agricultural business.
  • Elizabeth Weber, daughter of Nathan and Jill Weber of Mitchell, is a senior at Mitchell High School. She plans to attend South Dakota State University where she will study civil engineering.
  • Haelee Wuertzer, daughter of Royce and Jessica Wuertzer of Rapid City, is a senior at Stevens High School. She plans to attend Black Hills State University where she will study applied health science.
